Myth Busted - and a beautiful April Fool's Day

As you know - I have been seeking springtime... we've had hints of it, but March went out with icy rain cold and miserable.

One evening this week, we experienced a wonderful colorful red sky .... predicting a sailor's delight come morning ? I snapped several photo's of the red fog which settled in the valley and the horses in the misty field.

Well, as beautiful as this evening was with its promise of morning delights.... I awoke to torrents of cold rain mixed with bits of sleet and snow. That myth was busted. Too much mud, too much water.

We did manage to work with the 3 horses now in training though -- OYY Little "Z", OYY Niobe, and OYY HummingBird. Trainer Lisa had use of the indoor - the horses behaved and certainly listened.. but you could tell they weren't so happy with the weather.

Here's wet "Z", standing quietly next top the mounting block. We require this of all the horses... they can be mounted from the ground (in case of the need for that out and about) but for the most part, we always use the block. You can hear the pelting water on the roof.

Zoe and I got out for a couple of quick rides during the week... the best being on Wednesday. There was a brief reprieve from falling water -- somewhat warmer.. although it did begin to sprinkle again on our way home. Zoe rode in the 'soft' saddle, the Cashel saddle. Elektra loved it.. but Zoe had a workout. We rode about 10 or 12 miles... taking a few detours here and there.

The back roads were plenty muddy.

Turned off onto a snowmobile trail for a bit.

I used this ditch as an opportunity to use my new cue for Keri to jump something from a standing position. We went back and forth a few times while waiting for Zoe to take a phone call . Gave us time to practice.

We had some great canters - stopped to take a peek at one of my favorite stone wall/waterfall places. Sometimes, we walk down into the water - today.. there is quite a raging amount pouring through.

There is a LOT of water everywhere.. so we are staying away from certain trails this week.

Helped a lost truck find his way... and headed home as it began raining. I had loads of fun.. Zoe's thighs had a bit of burn ! :)

Now - today... April fool's for sure--- because, that spring we were searching for ?? -- hah... skip spring, summer was delivered by noon ! What a day !

Lisa started out the morning with her fleece.. soon she was stripping down layers. "Z" was calm and walking and trotting on the buckle... one more ride - she's ready to trot down the road. Lisa says she moves a lot like her sister, Elektra.

Niobe worked some more on her neck reining -- picking it up amazingly fast ! If this weather holds out - she'll be trotting down the road again - as she has before her maternity leave.

HummingBird was also a happy girl with the sun and will boogie down the dirt road next time as well... maybe just a bit of trail since she has had some degree of road experience already with pulling the cart once or twice.

I took some short video of "Z" and HummingBird -- missing quite a bit of Niobe's work-out when my plumber arrived for a repair.

HummingBird is full sister to this gelding, OYY Arcus. They both have an excellent work ethic -- both make great driving ponies, and both were easy to train. They are both 12.2 hands.

Now to save the best news for last... OYY My Sharona foaled on Monday early morning.. a nice bay curly filly -- sired by Mead's Chocolate Chip. They had to spend 2 days in the stall due to rain. One day, they ran and rolled in the indoor for a bit -- but today -- Thursday -- the new filly -- OYY Oona-- had a chance to show how beautiful and smart she is !! Just like her Mom and Dad.

Mom Sharona is maternal sibling to HumingBird and Arcus. What a super family !
Here's Oona on day 1.

Here she is on day 4 - today.

There's a determined little chin !

AHHHH - an itch satisfied. These humans are silly but handy for something.

Even though Oona is young - she may as well perform the same as all the other horses at Top O' The Hill Farm... and do some of the obstacles. She tries the bridge, the tire and the teeter-totter. What a gal !!

Plenty of room to "spare".

Mom is calm while watching her youngster. I am hoping to drive Sharona with Oona alongside this summer. Hopefully we'll find the time to accomplish that goal.

Now - the peepers are making a few trial peeps as the sun sets - the weather forecast is for very warm dry weather for a stretch of time ... so many fun things to do... We are going to try to get up the mountain (Mount Ephraim) on Saturday. I also want to make time to drive my Nimue ...

Enjoy ~
